Taharqa in portrait
Nubian pharaoh from the Kingdom of Kush, fifth ruler of the 25th Dynasty — he ruled an empire stretching to the Mediterranean.
The 25th Dynasty is known as the ‘Nubian dynasty’, because kings from the Kingdom of Kush (in present-day Sudan) ruled over the whole of Egypt. Taharqa had numerous temples built, including at Karnak, Kawa and Jebel Barkal. In 671 BC he lost Memphis to the Assyrian king Esarhaddon, fled to Nubia and was buried there in a pyramid at Nuri.
What is known about Taharqa
His reign was marked by the struggle against the Assyrians, who in 667/66 took northern Egypt as far as Thebes.
